Case Study — Midland Oil Group
Their customers couldn't
find what they needed.
Now the site finds it
for them.
Midland Oil Group supplies lubricants to every industry you can think of. Over 5,000 product variations. Four sub-brands. The old site made all of that harder to navigate, not easier. We rebuilt it from scratch around one question:
How do their customers actually buy?
Before
After
The client
Lubricant manufacturer and supplier. West Midlands. Four sub-brands, 8 services, 5,000+ product variations. ISO 9001 & 14001 certified. Visit the site →
What we did
Complete rebuild on a decoupled architecture. Custom typography, brand colour system, AI-powered product finder, sector-first navigation, service architecture, technical resource library, brand hub, legal infrastructure. No WordPress. No plugins.
The shift
From a tightly-coupled WordPress site that listed products and waited for phone calls — to a decoupled platform that understands what customers need and helps them find it themselves.
Where they were
A catalogue that expected customers
to already know the answer.
Midland Oil Group's old site was built like most industrial supplier websites — product pages, a contact form, and a prayer that the right people would find the right thing. The homepage was trying to rank for everything at once. The whole thing ran on WordPress with Beaver Builder and a stack of plugins that made it a security liability. It looked the part from a distance. Up close, it was working against the business.
The old site. Beaver Builder. Off-brand teal. Product-first thinking.
Product-first thinking
The site assumed visitors already knew what oil they needed. Most didn't. They knew their industry, their machine, their problem — not a product code.
Homepage trying to rank for everything
One page trying to compete for lubricants, oil manufacturing, waste oil collection, toll blending, and every sector they serve. That's not an SEO strategy — it's keyword cannibalisation. No dedicated landing pages, no topical authority, no chance of ranking for any of them properly.
No self-serve
Every single enquiry went through the sales team. 'What oil do I need for X?' over and over, all day. The site couldn't answer the most basic question.
Services hidden or missing
Waste Oil Collection and Sustainability — two real revenue services — were buried as afterthought links in the top bar. Not positioned as services. Not visible.
Security risk
WordPress core, Beaver Builder, plus a stack of plugins — all tightly coupled, all needing constant updates, all potential attack vectors. One missed patch and the entire site is exposed. For a business handling commercial contracts and procurement data, that's not a minor detail.
No credibility signals
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, but you'd never know from the website. No badges, no company number, no legal pages. For procurement teams and ESG-conscious buyers, that's a dealbreaker.
Generic everything
Built on Beaver Builder with a stock template. No brand typography, no proper colour palette — just a teal that had nothing to do with the business. Four distinct sub-brands with no visual distinction between them. It looked like every other industrial supplier online.
Technical resources dumped in a list
TDS documents and data sheets? A single downloads page with a flat list of files. No search, no filtering, no structure.
Same products.
Same expertise.
Completely different
experience.
Everything Midland Oil Group was great at was invisible. The rebuild made it impossible to miss.
What changed
A site that works the way
their customers think.
Six changes that turned a brochure site into a platform that earns its keep every day.
Sector-first thinking
Meet the customer where they are
The old site said: 'Here are our products. Figure out which one you need.' The new site says: 'What industry are you in? Let's start there.' Automotive, marine, industrial, agriculture — visitors pick their world and the site narrows everything down from there. No catalogue browsing. No guesswork.
Navigation that actually helps
Not just links — context
The old navigation was a flat list of dropdowns. Click and hope. The new mega-nav gives you descriptions, summaries, and direct CTAs inside the dropdown itself. You can see what each section is about before you commit to clicking. Sectors, products, services, brands — all one layer deep, all scannable in seconds.
Ask MOG™
The feature that changed the business
This is the big one. Ask MOG™ is a branded, trademarked AI-powered oil finder built into the site. A customer types in what they need — their vehicle, their machine, their application — and it recommends the right product. No phone call. No email. No waiting. The question that was clogging up the sales team all day, every day? The site answers it now.
Every service, visible
Eight services. All equal. All findable.
Waste Oil Collection and Sustainability used to be orphaned links. Now they sit alongside Toll Blending, Oil Regeneration, and every other service — each with its own dedicated page, its own URL, its own story. For procurement teams comparing suppliers, this is the difference between 'they might do that' and 'they definitely do that'.
Four brands, one identity
Coherent for the first time
Midland Oil Group runs four sub-brands — Midland Oil, Varsynth, Kwikfill, and Midland Oil Refinery. On the old site, you'd barely know — the same stock template and off-brand teal everywhere. Each brand now has its own hub, its own logo, its own positioning statement, and a proper colour palette. Custom typography replaced the generic Beaver Builder defaults. One company, four specialisms, all visually connected for the first time.
Technical Library
From file dump to resource hub
Every TDS document, every data sheet, every technical resource — structured, searchable, browsable. The old Downloads page was a flat list you had to scroll through. Now a procurement team can find the exact spec sheet they need in seconds.
Credibility that was always there
ISO certified. 150+ years
combined experience. Finally visible.
Midland Oil Group had all the credentials. ISO 9001. ISO 14001. Decades of expertise. A Companies House registration. None of it was on the website.
For anyone in procurement — especially in sectors where compliance and ESG matter — a site without those signals is a site that gets skipped. Now the badges are in the footer. The company number is visible. There's a proper Legal Centre with dedicated GDPR, Cookie Policy, and T&C pages. The kind of infrastructure that says: we take this seriously.
The homepage
First impression, completely
redesigned.
The homepage now does three things the old one never did: it tells you what Midland Oil Group actually does, it shows you why they're credible, and it gives you a way to find what you need — all without scrolling past the fold.
Side by side
Same company.
Completely different presence.
